WHY SOME WEBSITES DON'T RANK...
The biggest reason that most websites don't rank is that many simply don't have the ability to be indexed and/or ranked by any of the search engines.
Although your home page can be indexed as far as the domain name is concerned the content is often not indexed because of a few very basic mistakes.
FLASH IS NOT SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY!
The number one culprit is Full Flash Websites. Although they are really cool to watch, they have no value or abiity for the search engines to index the content. A Flash website is simply a bunch of layers of animation, images, audio, music and text all rendered just like a movie...
The search engines are unable to access the individual content and index it, therefore is not capable of being ranked.
Don't get me wrong, having an attractive, professional looking website is important! But you have to make sure that the search engines can read / index your website and they CANNOT index content that is rendered in a Flash Movie... No matter what ANYONE says...

The search engines CANNOT read the content in each of those flash pages... Some web developers try to get around this by adding hidden text content but in reality it's still one page and you may have the equivalent of 50 pages of content hidden in one page but the search engines will not index everything...they only go so far down and index so much of that content.. so again you are limited and ultimately the search engines will give you little or no ranking status.
CMS Websites are also very difficult to rank. Now don't get me wrong! Some sites if developed correctly can be optimized correctly but is usually a bit of a chore and often difficult to get real results. Many say they are SEO Friendly but check with your SEO consultant before you take one on... It's usually all about URL pathways... if the pathways cannot be read by a search engine, then they cannot access the web page to index and rank it.
